Stars Win Nail-Biter, 4-3
|
Cincinnati beat San Francisco at Pac Bell Park, escaping with a 4-3 win in 10 innings. The win in large part was due to catcher Francisco Alvarez. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Cincinnati reliever Mike Burrows picked up the win to move to 1-1. Mason Miller suffered the loss. Colin Holderman closed out the game, earning his 11th save.
Had Alvarez not come through in the top of the tenth, who knows how the game would've ended? But with two down, Alvarez hit a run-scoring single. The Stars took the lead, 4-3, and never looked back.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said San Francisco skipper Joe Turnage, "and it cost us."
With the win, Cincinnati has a record of 22-31. San Francisco falls to 32-21.
