Chicago designated hitter J.D. Martinez contributed significantly to his team's 7-4 win over the Washington Hitmen. Martinez, who finished 3rd in the UL in extra base hits with 77 in 2016, went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Explorers. Cody Poteet got credit for the win, improving to 4-5. He allowed 4 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings. Chicago now sits at 46-42, while Washington falls to 41-47.

With the game tied, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth, Martinez had a key at-bat for Chicago. With a runner on 2nd, Martinez hit a run-scoring single off Christian Scott, making the score 5-4, Explorers.
