Madison left fielder Drew Avans went down swinging at Beacons Ballpark, knocking out 5 hits even as his Millers fell, 9-7.

"It was like I was hitting Little League pitching," Avans said after his 5-for-5 performance against the Plattsburgh Beacons. "No offense meant to Plattsburgh, but it was like I was back in little league again -- I could see the ball that well."

After the game, his manager elaborated on the left fielder's improvements, saying Avans spent the offseason trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball.

"That's what I'm trying to do," Avans agreed. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."

Drew Avans singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and doubled in the 8th.

Currently Avans has 1 home run and a .294 batting average.
